Breeding

Breeding is not for everyone. It sounds glorious but trust me, once your gliders start having joeys, it never ends . Many say " I just want them to have one set of joeys first: Please don't do this.   Breeding is not for everyone. It sounds g do this. Go ahead and get the male neutered.

Sugar gliders live in groups in the wild, which typically contain more females  males. Often only one dominant male will breed and the majority of the females will reproduce. Gliders in the wild, breed in June and July with most of the young are born in the early spring. There is not a breeding season in captive animals. They will breed year round.
If you keep a male and female sugar glider together, they will mate (mother/son, brother/sister, etc.) and more than likely to produce young. If you are planning on keeping gliders that are related together, it is best that you neuter the males.
I have read that sugar glider breeding can be hard, where there may be bite marks, I have not seen it in my gliders as yet, but please still check your gliders that are breeding for wounds or scratches.
Gestation period is 16 days , at this time the rice sized joey crawls up to pouch after mommy has licked a path to area of pouch. and once in pouch, it is another 70 days.
As far as nutrition, I feed REEP’s Wombaroo diet and I give extra to the pregnant Mommies.
Both parents may show behavior being more protective.
Female anatomy: there is a pouch where you should see a belly button. Male anatomy: In the same place the females pouch is, you will see the scrotum. The penis is bifurcated, which looks like two pink string like appendages at area of cloaca.Sugar gliders have one to two joeys, and on occasion they may have three, which is rare.Gliders usually have joeys two times a year, but I do have some that breed three to four. Joeys eyes open about ten days once out of pouch.
When is it time for the joey to leave the parents? 8 weeks is the ideal length. At this time they are weaned. If they are pulled at 3-4 weeks they may die, since they do not keep their own body heat until 5 weeks oop. ( out of pouch) . Thus, you will never need a dreaded heat rock.
Cannabalism can happen, but , does not occur highly. Stress may be factor if it does occur.
I use cage pouches for area of sleep. I add little fleece blankets.
You can handle joeys at the very young age if you are bonded to the female, Hold for a about three minutes. Parents may be protective, I offer a treat while I am holding the joeys.
I have noticed when joey leaves I might hear female barking some. I know the joey will bark for about two or three nights and appetite may not be good but everything back to normal on day three.
